YIS High School

Built around globally-recognized North American standards, Yangon International School educators have worked together to shape lifelong learners who are academically well-prepared, socially responsible, culturally sensitive, and personally fulfilled. YIS was founded in 2004, and in 2021 the school was authorized to begin offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program. As a supportive learning community, our IB program is academically rigorous—challenging students to engage in critical and creative thought via IB courses and Core elements that include the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge course—while recognizing that both social and emotional learning are critical to our students’ success. We also celebrate service as a key element of the IB Core, CAS (Creativity, Action and Service) Program, placing a primacy on service learning and a commitment to developing global citizens who model gratitude and empathy.

Yangon International School’s high school program offers a dynamic, academically rigorous and holistic curriculum that culminates in both the YIS American high school diploma and International Baccalaureate diploma. For the YIS diploma, students are required to complete 26 credits with requirements in English language arts, math, science, social studies, physical education, studio and performing arts, technology, world languages, and college and career studies. Our Myanmar Studies program has long been one of YIS’s strengths and now incorporates both language studies and historical/geographical studies.

As high schoolers prepare for university studies and life beyond school, they explore what it means to become life-long learners. They take part in a range of extra-curricular activities such as clubs, sports teams, student publications, student council, National Honor Society, service opportunities, and international and national trips. Our student leaders take the cultivation of younger leaders seriously, and the National Honor Society’s peer tutoring program helps prepare younger YIS students for success in the IB and in their lives.
